***Can you name any of the sites we got to see in San Antonio? Check the pictures for clues.*** Students in 5th grade have been receiving Civil War news through dispatches that arrive unexpectedly during the day. Students need to be prepared to record this information and use the facts they learn to write to their Civil War “pen pal”. The letters they exchange are filled with information about the war and their characters. Here are a few of the characters that helped bring the Civil War to life for the 5th grade:
Many thanks to all of the people that made the dispatches possible! Spirit Week was a BIG success. There were lots of great looks in the classroom. Here are just a few:
OK! Spirit Week in 5SW is coming up next week. Here’s the schedule: Monday (5/19) Pajama Day Tuesday (5/20) Crazy Clothes Day Wednesday (5/21) Business Day Thursday (5/22) Hat & Sunglass Day Friday (5/23) Crazy Hair & Bring a Stuffed Animal to School Day (bonus if you combine these two ideas in some way) Look for pictures to be posted on the blog during Spirit Week! Hey students in 5SW… Would you like to have a “Spirit Week”? What kind of fun things would you like to do? Crazy hair day, Business day? Comment and let us know! We’ll compile results and talk more in class. On Wednesday the students in 5SW built solar cars. Students used K’NEX and followed the directions included in the kit. It was sometimes trickier than it seemed! There were two types of cars to build. One that was powered by a solar panel and one that was powered by a capacitor charged by solar power! It was a great way to celebrate all that students had accomplished during the Building Big / Going Green unit of study. Families, teachers and community members were impressed with all that the students shared on BB/GG Night. Solar cars were a fun way to celebrate and connect to all that students had learned! Here are some pictures of the solar car fun:
  This week our focus was on building large bridges. Students applied what they had learned about different types of bridges (truss, suspension, post and beam, cable-stayed, arch) to their design and construction. Limited supplies of straws and straight pins were allowed for the main parts of the bridge. Tape was allowed for attaching the bridges to chairs or stools. Students then tested their structure with rolling a baseball across and to see how much weight it would hold. Check out these great final designs!
