OK – I know you are all aching for some “Math in the PM”…well, here is a problem to solve. Yes, the answer can be found on the site, but I’m not looking for the answer. HOW did you solve it? Try to explain! If you have not solved it yet, don’t check the comments from your classmates as they might explain how they solved it… So here is a link to the problem:

With all of the thunderstorms we’ve had in the past few weeks, there have been some great clouds! Remember the cumulonimbus clouds? The “granddaddy” of all clouds? Well, check these pictures out, as seen from above the earth:

Our librarian helped to introduce you to some books that were recommended summer reading through the North Hampton Public Library. Some other links are posted to the right under “Reading”. Hope this helps. Keep sending your recommendations and we’ll post them! Happy reading.

Here is some information about another reading program…you can earn money while reading! :)

Your teachers would like to thank you for a wonderful year. We especially enjoyed the last day surprise party that you organized for us. We were touched by all of the hard work and planning you put into that day. We also loved reading the thoughtful comments added to the blog. You all certainly have some great advice for the upcoming 5th graders. We look forward to a summer filled with fun, learning and of course, blogging! Blog on! We can’t wait to hear what adventures you are all up to over the summer, so stay in touch!

What advice would  you give a student entering the classroom of 5SW?

The thunderstorms stayed away so the 5th grade headed to the beach for our last full day of school. Students walked all the way there and were rewarded with some great weather, and ice cream!

We braved the seas and overcast skies and headed out to George’s Island in Boston Harbor. Students visited Fort Warren and explored the former Civil War fort. They enjoyed dark tunnels, historical stories and a relaxing day!

The fifth grade traveled back in time to the Civil War and enjoyed breakfast on Friday. Students became characters from the historical fiction books they had been reading. These characters interacted while enjoying some tasty vittles!

We bid one of our classmates farewell today…here are two class photos that we took after our first end of the year celebration:

Students in 5th grade have been receiving Civil War news through dispatches that arrive unexpectedly during the day. Students need to be prepared to record this information and use the facts they learn to write to their Civil War “pen pal”. The letters they exchange are filled with information about the war and their characters.

Here are a few of the characters that helped bring the Civil War to life for the 5th grade:

Many thanks to all of the people that made the dispatches possible!
