This week our focus was on building large bridges. Students applied what they had learned about different types of bridges (truss, suspension, post and beam, cable-stayed, arch) to their design and construction. Limited supplies of straws and straight pins were allowed for the main parts of the bridge. Tape was allowed for attaching the bridges to chairs or stools. Students then tested their structure with rolling a baseball across and to see how much weight it would hold. Check out these great final designs!

I like how the bridges all seem to have slightly different design elements incorporated into them, particularly in the support that leads to the ground. This post seems to include the many student suggestions on how we can strengthen the quality and look of our blog so I am excited to see how the students of 5SW keep this up! Today we will start working with Building Big Goes Green and it will be fun to talk about how these designs might be altered to be more energy and earth friendly! Build on!

This bridge lab was a blast! It was so much fun to make all of the changes and watch other people test as well as watching yourself to see how well your bridge making went.
