On Monday, students headed out to the Nature Trail once again. This time they had to send the class across five tire swings. This took a lot of creative problem solving and a lot of teamwork! Students found that they used their habits of strength. They also had opportunities to work on any habits that needed improvement while SWinging through the air!

Here’s what they had to say about the experience:

“I felt like I was going to fall off!”

“I think I worked on my habit to improve because I was trying to be a leader as much as I could when people needed help getting from one tire to another. I gave suggestions for what might work to get from one tire to another.”

“I had to use confidence. I liked how I almost fell, but I didn’t. I caught the tire.”

“I was pretty worried because I don’t like heights. I didn’t like the swinging of the tires. It was a bit too tall for me. I think that challenge took a lot of trust.”

“It was a really tough challenge. I found it hard to climb from tire to tire. I learned that you really need to trust your classmates to finish the challenge.”

“I learned that it’s better to go in the front of the line so that you get a chance to finish the challenge. I used my habit of strength by being a leader and compromising with what other people wanted to do.”

“I sort of used my habit of strength of leadership to help my partner. It was more of a partner challenge. We had to think of a strategy as a whole group too.”

“I kind of used my habit of strength, which is sticking to my work. I did that by not giving up and I tried to think of new ways to get everybody across.”

“I would say that this has been the hardest challenge of the year so far. I don’t think I used my habit of strength, which is leadership. I was trying to let other people lead the group. It was not the same as the other challenges we’ve done. This was not as much of a group challenge.”

“I really did use my habit of strength, which is being positive. I kept a positive attitude because if you get mad, it doesn’t get you anywhere. I worked on my habit to improve, which is following directions. I did that by listening to what I should look out for and how to do the challenge.”

“I thought it was challenging. It was kind of hard to push people while being on a tire that is swinging.”

“I liked how it was challenging. It made me want to keep trying different solutions to get across the tires.”

“I thought it was really hard and in that challenge I was sort of a leader. I was a leader because I told people what to do to get to the next tire. Once I had touched the tree at the end my arms really hurt.”

This Thursday students shared what they had learned about their Freedom Trail site. When we traveled to Boston on our field trip, students became experts in specific sites along the trail. Students learned all they could about what significance their site had to the Revolutionary War. These experts shared the information they had learned with the whole 5th grade! There were skits, movies and slide shows to share!
